A wannabe (aren’t we all) published author who can’t seem to get passed the 20,000 word mark without getting distracted and moving on to another idea that just happens to pop into her brain as she is writing.

Hopefully reading and reviewing work from Urbis and being able to upload chapters that she has completed, will give her the push she needs to just get on with it and stop procrastinating.

Short Story / Robert and Delilah

“It’s all rather ridiculous, really,” she said to the dog as she stood in front of the mirror, “getting dressed up just to break up with someone.” The sight of herself in her old floral sundress made her snort. “Silly old fool,” she said to her reflection shaking her head. “At your age you should know better than to get yourself in to these situations in the first place.” And yet here I am, she thought with a sigh. She'd never meant for it to happen. If only she hadn't accidentally caught his...

Short Story / The End

Sarah shivered. It was a fitting place to draw an end to everything; the end of a life she hated, in a place she despised. She stood on the promenade looking at the long, thin strip of sand that stretched for miles in either direction. Six consecutive summers she had been dragged to this place, this hell on earth with its cheap B&B’s, scratchy sheets and even scratchier landladies. Six years of stretching out on the gritty, dirty sand amongst the other hundreds who flocked here every summer....

The pan of deep brown molten chocolate began to bubble. Isabel moved it off the flame and set it on the counter beside a bag of marshmallows and a plate covered in hundreds and thousands, and began to dip. She took the marshmallows, one at a time, and dipped them first in the chocolate, then in the hundreds and thousands, and then dropped them onto the tray, licking the drips off her fingers after each one. Dip, dip, drop, lick. Dip, dip, drop, lick. She closed her eyes savouring the rich sm...

Non-fiction / The Miscarriage

Miscarriage was one of those things, like cancer or identity theft, that happened to other people, not to me. Even when the bleeding started the week before I told myself it was just light spotting, nothing to worry about, perfectly normal. Call it optimism, call it denial, but whatever it was it didn’t last. The day my rose tinted glasses came off started much like any other, with a high pitched squeal from the room next door. “What time is it?” Came a groggy voice from under the duvet. I fu...

Horror / A Balanced Diet
a very fun read. the initial opening in the "cafe" is very nicely done. As we read through we start to get a feeling he is not talking about food from a menu but the people that pass by. I like your style, the short sentences work well and fir in with the character. He comes across as rather suave and one can imagine him tucking into these meals with a good wine and apreciating the finer things in life. As we move to the girls on the tube we understand tht his cafe is in fact the tube and the...

Short Story / Boopopper’s Last Bop
this is one of the most bizarre, entertaining and delightfuly worded storys I have read in a long time. A real pleasure. The story drags you in from the off. A couple of things on the first page that had me puzzeling and therefore pulled me out of the flow of the story were the mention of his love affair ending over ham sandwhiches and the fact that the band didn't care about his health. Neither seemed to fit into the paragraph they were in very well. I loved the satisfying way in which all b...
Short Story / California People
a well told and well written short story. The dialogue and way in which you portrayed Micheals feelings and thoughts here worked well and made for two very realistic characters. I particularly liked the way in which you captured his reaction and bemusement with the the simplicity of the word “Oh-kay…” The story had just enough information about their past and their relationship to make it as a stand alone piece and as such I enjoyed the ending which is, without needing to add anything else, v...
