An ancient tree stands at the edge of a great forest, slightly apart from the neighboring trees. Outwardly the tree seems strong and virile, its bark crusted from years of growth and weather, its branches gnarled and still covered with gray-green leaves. Inside, its heart grows ever darker, eaten away by the long, lonely years. It stands far enough away from the forest that its neighbors have long forgotten it. Its leaves sigh in the breeze, longing for companionship. Its face is turned away,...

one day into the next my life in watercolor all sullen shades of gray a sudden, vibrant drop of color that quickly fades to nothing crude, clumsy strokes my life in charcoal simple lines and lazy curves no shape or substance a work in progress forever incomplete a malformed shape my life in sculpture carving and forming a mass unfinished subract to add negative space a single frame my life on film the light is never right and never long enough always the same shot wasted paper

when my heart breaks she finds a way to mend it when my eyes fill with tears she finds a way to make them smile when i don't feel loved she finds a way to love me her quiet grace and subtle ways move me like no other her gentle voice and easy laugh set my mind at ease were she to touch my face it would shake me to my core a soft caress would mean the world to me a tender kiss would shatter all my defenses this is love i know this is love

a vicious man shattered the girl broke her spirit she wept the shards are still deep the pain lingers a needle pulling skin hoping to change the pain free it somehow she bleeds she moves through life shadows of her past still chasing haunting every step every look every breath she sighs hope intercedes a spark of awareness of passion of need she plays and sings escape across the ocean a moment's respite a simple life of renewal she lives

Poetry / Just Words
I haven't seen any previous versions of this, but whatever work you've done to rewrite this has paid off. This poem is very intense without being overwrought. You've done a wonderful job of conveying the power of words that some people have. I very much enjoyed this poem.
Lovely poem. I like that it's concise, while still being quite heartfelt. Well done!
