Poetry / I saw Death too Closely

I spotted all their tired souls
Floating over fields of snow
It was in the middle of December
And truly this much I remember
The glimmering specters of forsaken sun
And long torn down spider webs ruined for fun
Danced and mourned all equally
Moving on like a silent sea
So close to my window covered in frost
And suddenly with a thought I was accost
I saw how close to Death I sat
With her painted black sleigh and Spanish veiled hat
While by my side you lay asleep
Such a lively countenance you keep
So with souls on the outside dancing away
Made up of things forgotten today
Inside I turned and slipped back into dreams
Knowing though life’s close, Death’s not far as she seems
