Non-fiction / Reasons to Quit Smoking

Why You Should Quit Smoking
There are three main reasons to quit smoking.  The first is that it is unattractive.  There are very few non-smokers who would choose to sit in the smoking section at a restaurant if there are open seats in the no smoking section.  This is because the smell of cigarettes is one that people find unpleasant.  It also turns a smoker’s teeth yellow and makes his breath smell bad.

This leads to the second reason: smoking costs an extraordinary amount of money.  At about a buck and a half apiece, a pack of breath mints or gum can cost about eighty dollars per year.  Professional teeth whitening costs between 200 and 600 dollars per treatment.  The average cost for a pack of cigarettes in the United States is about four dollars.  At this price a pack-a-day smoker burns through about 1,500 dollars a year.  Someone who smokes a pack a day from the time they are eighteen to the time they are seventy spends 78,000 dollars in their lifetime on cigarettes.  And that’s a person who smokes only a pack a day.  Health and life insurance are more expensive for smokers.  Insurance through Budgetlife.com cost about 1,000 dollars per year for nonsmokers and almost 5,000 for smokers.  Insurance is more expensive because smokers have a high risk of hospitalization.

The final and most essential reason for not smoking is that it harms your body.  Ash.org says that the different types of cancer caused by smoking include, but are not limited to, lung, mouth, bladder, breast, cervical, and kidney.  Cdc.gov states that 400,000 Americans die every year from cigarette smoking.  If the knowledge that you are slowly killing yourself is not enough to make you quit smoking, how about the knowledge that you are leading others to their deaths as well?  Thirty-eight thousand nonsmokers die each year from secondhand smoke.  The hardship of quitting smoking seems like a small price to pay for some extra cash, becoming a more attractive person, and adding a few years to your life.

I would have to agree with the other person’s review. While what you wrote was well said, you offer no solution. Quiting smoking is clearly not easy or, for the very reasons you listed, every smoker would quit immediately. It is important when you offer such an opinion or warnings to include alternatives for those who may agree with you, but need more information.

i dont have to agree with it to say it is a well-written piece and fairly persuasive.
one thing i would add to it, however, is where a person could get help if they were so inclined to listen to your persuasion and try to quit. you already found some websites for information, im sure you can find some for help and support.
