Non-fiction / What is the single most important thing.

Not everything we do here is art.  Hardly a thing I do should even be in the same room as art.  I do want to be the best I can be, but at what cost?
What is a convention and why does it exist?  I think it is to have a common standard on which to be judged.  Then why do we want to be judged?  I think it is to be respected by our peers.  Who are these peers and why are they our peers?  Like minded people with like minded goals.
I could go on in such a fashion for many moons to come, but I won’t, it’s just not practical.  What is practical is expression, in any form.  I think that expression is fantastic and it’s one of the only things we as humans can do by ourselves.  It’s when it gets out of hand that you have a problem.  It’s up to those that expose themselves to such things to understand the piece, what ever the form it takes.  I don’t believe for one minute that everyone will get what I am trying to do.  Maybe I am merely expressing myself because it’s nice to have a voice.  It’s a way to write down some of the things that have been rattling around my head and share them with you.  I enjoy enjoying things, and if that is wrong, in any form, I don’t want to know what right is.
Not that I don’t wish to be a better writer, in fact I know I do, but first I want to find a voice.  I am not a professional, nor do I want to be.  I also wanted to be a professional hockey player, but I still play hockey.  I guess what I am saying is that when I read the items in here I look more for content, and less for grammar. I suppose it’s possible that some publisher could be milling the shoals for a great catch (and yes, I know that doesn’t make sense, but it sounds cool) but chances are this is more for getting good ideas and bad ideas out in the open.  Most of us would have to tie people up and get them to listen to what we’ve written, and if you’re not one of those people I salute you.
On the other hand, I could be wrong.  This might be a way for better writers to become great writers.  There’s nothing wrong with that either.  Just don’t be surprised if the scores and advice you get is a bit skewed at times.  People take things way to personally.  That is the nature of being human.
So what if I told you I don’t give a flying fuck about what you had to say and I am just glad you read it.  Does that bother you.  It shouldn’t.  Or if you’re going to criticize bad spelling and grammar, you should be damn sure that you’ve dotted your I’s and crossed your T’s.  Or else I might not take it seriously.  Now how’s that for bad grammar?
I really like this site, but please don’t regurgitate what some teacher or professor has said to us all ad naseum.  Of course some stuff is better then others, but try to keep it on context.  Contructive criticism is exactly that.  Constructive.  Let us all break with convention, like all good artists do, and keep things in context.  Bearing in mind that I am not an artist.

An artist.  Here is the definition of artist;
One, such as a painter, sculptor, or writer, who is able by virtue of imagination and talent or skill to create works of aesthetic value, especially in the fine arts.
A person whose work shows exceptional creative ability or skill: You are an artist in the kitchen.
One, such as an actor or singer, who works in the performing arts.
One who is adept at an activity, especially one involving trickery or deceit: a con artist.

By this definition I dont know anyone who is not an artist in one form or fashion.  As for grammar, I dont particularly care if yours is great I just want to be able to understand and visualize what it is you are attempting to paint in my mind.  Not all gramatical errors impede that but some do.  It is the same as saying I would be interested in knowing what kind of paint you used but I dont care about the kind of paint if I cant see the picture.

At what cost?  This is such a good question and one that must be answered by each of us.  We have to answer it in our everyday lives about everyday situations and it is fitting that we should have to answer it about our art as well.  At what cost?  ...I like that thought provoking question very much.

I think you are an artist and maybe sometimes you wish you saw the world with a different view, from different eyes.  But your view is needed too.

I could not agree with you more. This is not the forum for editing grammar and spelling. That’s what editors are for. This is a place to share ideas and get feedback on them. Kudos to your thoughts.

I don’t know Jesse…I think you’re already heeding the advice of your peers.  This had flow, edge (in almost all the right places), and enough implication to make me visualize what you were saying.

The best part is, I was able to read it…from the beginning to the end.  Not only that, but I wanted to.  I was never once compelled to stop. Something I can’t really say for the last one.

I do have one beef, with reference to “but please don’t regurgitate what some teacher or professor has said to us all ad naseum.”  There’s a reason why I regurgitated that one bit of advice to you…you needed to hear it. Plain and simple.  Don’t worry though (not that you are `wink) I’m not offended.

Now…before I wrap this little diddy up, I wish to leave you with my favorite line from this essay.

“Most of us would have to tie people up and get them to listen to what we’ve written, and if you’re not one of those people I salute you.”

Bearing in mind…that you are not an artist, I salute you.  Thanks for sharing the inside of your brain.  It’s a good read.

i think we want to be judged to know where we stand, and why we want to know where we stand is to make ourselves better.  we want to be better to be looked up to and respected in sense that we find important to us.  good for speaking your mind, that way we know what those outside of our own minds and in society think of it.
