Poetry / My Love

I struck you; you turned away
Stung by my arrogant pride, rejected –
My love, my counterpart.
I hardened breaking heart
Knowing you would leave,
That I’d never see you again –
No chance for a brand new start.

.

I stumbled brokenly in the dark
Of fear and anger and pain,
And how I cried that night,
Grounded soul never taking flight.
With you went the sun,
For the dawn without love
Is the moon without its light.

.

The world turned without me
And left me far behind;
How long I wept I don’t know;
When I looked out the window
I saw an empty world,
A spring without flowers,
A winter without snow.

.

I rose and took the endless road;
I walked on crunching leaves
Knowing not where my feet took me.
Eternal autumn under sobbing trees,
Down cheerless highway
And flatland vistas,
Toward the mountains or the sea.

.

Gusts of wind began to blow,
Whispering in my ears;
I whirled and listened hard.
I gasped. O shattered heart!
Hope: Tell me it might be!
My beloved has came after me,
He cannot bear us apart.

.

Turning back, I ran with all my might!
That he truly loved me –
O, were that it were true!
Over leagues my weary feet flew,
With soul and strength born anew;
Rushing over lands
I once struggled through.

.

Something was wrong;
As I drew near to him
I felt it wrench at me inside.
A cross stood against the sky,
Blood dripping from the beams,
A bitter gall breaking down
My cruel and heartless pride.

.

The sun fell from its realm
As I dropped upon my knees;
My heart sank in despair.
They saw him, the king’s own heir,
And in their jealousy
They slaughtered him;
A lamb lying sweet upon the bier.

.

Blood and thorns, wood and rock,
Mingled blood and tears;
I tore my veil to shreds.
A rude crown upon his head,
Spikes through foot and palm;
My prince took upon himself
The fate meant for me instead.

.

They came to capture me,
To end my wretched life;
But my love died for me,
He died because of me.
My remorse flowed as river rain
Fell from his gentle face;
He gave his life to set me free.

.

Burning, aching agony;
Red chariots raced away;
I looked up and saw him gone,
The curtain of the night now drawn.
But through my tears there broke a star;
I slowly rose to give weary chase,
Wondering at the angels’ song.

Suddenly the heavens opened,
And from the glory stepped my love;
He came to me: “Peace be with you.”
“My king, my prince, is it truly you?”
Breathless I waited on his words
As he smiled down on me,
Showing nail-scarred hands as proof.

.

Sobbing I fell at his feet
But he took me in his arms,
What was my love compared to his?
I knew I didn’t deserve this.
But what choice lay before me?
Shallow freedom led to slavery!
So I accepted perfect bliss.

.

Safe in his embrace
I went with him to his home;
Cloud swallowed up the earth below.
Love, shield me in warm glow,
With you I dance forever;
Radiance, Beauty, my Perfect One,
I’ll always love you ever so.

This poem is absolutely gorgeous.  I love how you wrote about Jesus in it, and the phrases you used, such as “a rude crown,” and “my remorse flowed as river rain” show great imagery.  You have a brilliant way with words.  Keep writing, please.
