Poetry / as my friend

as my friend

so…while you helped yourself to
my intimate details
and all that dirty laundry
...did you love me then too?
and…
while you were programming
lies into my mind
pumping hallucinogens
into my body…
did you think to show me your love?
Or…
was that just how you sought
to guarantee yourself mine?
I felt your presence always.
but…
you were a master of disguise…
and my vulnerable heart
only a delectable snack to distract you
from my very soul…
sad…
by the time I realized
it was already much too late to run.
I’d seen you coming.
...as my friend.

I really like the way this speaks about the reality of most relationships, you start to fall in-love with someone then they end up being completely different to the way they first acted, but by then your already emotionally invested! I love the way you’ve found the words to turn it into poetry.

This is a wonderful slep in the face for anyone who doesn’t want to admit that friendship, and love, is a ‘two way street.’ This person ‘you’ has clearly created a sense of trust in you, but then not trusted you in return. They have all the insight into your life without allowing you into theirs. I like the sense of anger and frustration when you accuse them of “programming lies” and “pumping hallucinogens” suggesting that the relationship is based on things that are either untrue or unreal, all the while securing that to the narrator relationship is real and important. Nothing can devalue the reality you feel regardless of the other person’s sincerity.
