Poetry / We Don't Need Everything
he meant to write it when he remembered
what he needed
he went out for a walk
looking for someone
all he needed was something
he stepped in all the holes
in all the pavements
and wondered if people had less now
than they had before
or whether they just thought
they wanted more
he stepped in all the holes
in his arguments
and knew after all
when you get close to something
you’re never sure
if you want it
or just want more
and when people go by
he thinks for a second they could be her
he snaps at his breath and holds it
until he sees it’s someone else
and constructs his theory to hold the world
we don’t need everything
just someone who isn’t just
someone else

I really related to this poem. I like the repetition with a progression of meaning. There seem to be three important issues in the poem, all developed perfectly. The lower case works for me, another way of saying another person can be a match as long as they are special, or, we don’t have just one soulmate. Another theme is mistaking a person for someone you know. I’ve done that and I could feel the letdown in the poem. Beautifully executed.

a ‘what could have been’ kind of thing. it’s a beautiful poem. i like that you are taking a walk, thinking about the holes in your life, in your arguments. it reads beautifully, and i really like the last stanza where in that split second you reassemble the world for someone who is/isn’t in your life yet. it’s a wonderful poem / comment of life.
