Sci Fi & Fantasy / X-Mutations Episode One Prologue

Prologue

Evolution is a slow and gradual process, often taking millions years. It brought mammals to power while the dinosaurs froze. It took mankind as four-legged simple primates and over millions of years, changed him into something more than his primate cousins. Man began to walk upright, learned to use tools, learned to survive in the world. As a species, man learned to harness the power of its greatest weapon: the human brain. With it, mankind rose from prey to predator, taking its place at the top of the food chain. The next stage had been reached and Homo sapiens inherited the Earth.

Evolution is a slow and gradual process, often taking millions of years. However, there are times when it must take a sudden, violent, and unexpected leap forward. Scientists working with the human genome discovered an anomaly: an extra chromosome. This wild card mutation at first seemed to be nothing, just a random genetic error. The team determined that there were several thousand people that had been born with the extra chromosome, many of which were living normal, happy and healthy lives. Then things began to change; people across the globe began to come forward, claiming they had strange gifts. Each possessed some different form of mutation that made them more than human. It seemed as though evolution was ready to take the next step. However; this time things were different.

In times gone by, evolution had done its work unchecked. However, now it was met with opposition; mankind rebelled against the very tool that had brought it to power. The discovery that had once brought praise now brought scorn and hatred. The knowledge that mutants existed triggered a fear rooted deep with human nature; a new race, a potentially superior, race was springing up among them and there was no way to tell them apart. However, this new race was not without its champions. A handful of groups knew of the next evolutionary step and had been expecting the mutants for quite a time. Some sought to train the mutants to use their gifts for the benefit of both races. Others saw mutants as instruments of war to gain power and wealth. To many mutants, it seemed that no matter what they did, they were still controlled by humans.

The stage has been set. Evolution has made its move and those it has taken with it will have to fight for their existence or perish. The humans that have grown so comfortable with their dominance and superiority are determined not to let that happen.

A nice introductary piece, setting the scene for the new world that will be unleashed.

It is quite a dramatic build up,and I could not find any major probs with grammar.

Never tell anyone it’s a bit like x-men, if it’s not like x-men then try and show the difference early on (eg, is it spiritual gifts, instead of pyhysical, or both).

Don’t give a reader an opportunity to compare it to something else, ensure they read it as stan alone.

A well crafted into, keep going with it.

An excellent summary of the opening sequence to Robert Singer’s, ‘X-men’. You hint in the opening paragraph of the struggle that man has made through evolution, is this going down the Magneto pathway?

Occassional grammar error ‘had been expected(?) the mutants’

Nicely written, but after 11 rewrites (wow! that’s tenacious) I can’t help thinking now is the time for you to evolve beyond fan-fiction into your own original work.
