Short Story / A Heart May Beat
She did not want to believe a word he said. But she listened. She listened hard to his soft words, spilling from his lips. The lips she once desired to kiss. The lips that spoke the words that pierced her soul each time. The aching pain within her heart wanted her to move far far away from the place she was now held captive. But she listened. She listened with everything she had to everything he wanted. Everything being her. She did not budge. She sat there lonely though in the company of a man that was now a stranger in her eyes. But there was something that she could not let go. Something was holding her there. Something was making her stay. She wanted to scream and yell and run as fast as she could out the door and into another world. But she listened. She listened until the blood in her veins started to churn and her heart beat so fast she could no longer catch her breath. He was killing her. Killing her with words. She never knew that someone that was spilling their heart, could hurt someone so bad inside. But she listened. She listened to the words coming from a man she once loved. Loves. Will love. Forever. She gave him her attention because she knew she could not escape the inevitable. She could not leave this place she knew she belonged. Afterall, a heart may beat fast, but it does not go anywhere. She yearned so much for her feet to take her away. To get up and say goodbye to the pain and the angst. To let go of the love the was eating away at her. But she listened. She listened. She listened because she loved him.
