Young Adult / Bonds of Fate Book 1: Golden Sky CH 1

                                                         Chapter 1

Three years ago

Ixion Valerious grunted as he fell onto his back, a wooden katana at his throat. “If this was an actual battle, you’d be dead” Ixion’s teacher, Rokue Kishimoto, said with a smirk. Ixion scowled. “I will defeat you one day” That only got a chuckle from his teacher as a response. “Let’s clean up and prepare for the arrival of the two mages.” Rokue grinned when his young student was on his feet in a flash. At age eighteen, he was almost at the level of the Great Warrior, the leader of Terra, country of humans. “Are they coming today?” Ixion’s crystal blue eyes gleamed in excitement as he stared at Rokue. “Yes they are” He replied and lightly ruffled Ixion’s black with blue streaks hair. “Come and freshen up in the river” He said and threw his apprentice with ease into the river. Ixion landed with a loud splash and surfaced sputtering. “You think” He coughed. “I stink? You should smell yourself” Rokue sighed and crossed his arms. “Now, now Ixion, do not say such things” With that said, Rokue pulled the leather band from his hair to let the dark red strands come free over his shoulders. “Make way for your ‘smelly’ teacher” Ixion’s eyes widened as he moved to get out of the way before Rokue tackled him. Seconds later, they started a wrestling match to pass time and stay in shape as Rokue said.

About an hour later, they both were gathering their practice swords and food packs when they suddenly heard a scream followed by the thundering sound of hooves. The two warriors tensed as the sounds approached. “Someone stop this horse!!!” Yelled a female voice. Ixion and Rokue looked at each other with bewildered looks; they thought someone was being attacked. It was actually a woman having horse trouble, Rokue grinned. “Loser pays for dinner” Ixion grinned back, catching the meaning: First one to save the damsel in distress gets a free dinner, loser pays. Right as they were about to run into the forest to help, a large bay jumped over a fallen log out of the forest, cantering toward the river with a hysteric rider on top. Ixion and Rokue jumped out of the way, almost getting trampled.

With quick thinking, Rokue rushed to grab one of the reigns that was flying to the side. That action caused the horse to rear and throw off the rider. Ixion ran to catch the woman, only for her to land on him, knocking him to the ground. He winced from the fall, his arms wrapped around a thin, yet plump body. ‘Heavy’ He thought and looked at the silver with blood red streaks head. “Are you ok?” He asked, wanting to get her off him. “Ah!” She pushed herself off him, accidentally kneeing him in the groin. “Ugh…” Ixion groaned, slowly getting up. “I’m so sorry! Please don’t be mad at me” She said, bowing a couple of times. Rokue chuckled as he walked over to them, with the now calmed horse. Ixion glared at Rokue, mouthing that it’s a tie. “Seems our young mage had a small problem”

At his teacher’s words, Ixion took a better look at the flustered girl who stopped bowing and apologizing. Her hair framed her heart shaped face, golden eyes, wide from the shock and curious. She wore a dark purple cloak, showing that she is part of Lunalesca, the organization for mages. Ixion continued to stare at her, noting her pale complexion and that her hair was longer than it seemed. Blinking, he noticed that she was barefoot. How odd. It made him smile. She was short too, about five four. “Are you ok?” Rokue’s question brought Ixion back to reality and looked away. “Yes…Thank you” She replied, giggling a bit as her face turned red. “I’m afraid that Daisy never had a liking to me”

“Kaira!!” The three of them turned to see a second rider appear.

Lillian Yang gently pulled on the reigns to stop her horse. Her eyes landed on the three that were staring at her. She quickly recognized her young apprentice, Kaira Lafayett, but she did not recognize the two men. They were about the same height, six three, she guessed. The older man with bright green eyes, held the reigns of Daisy, Kaira’s horse. Scars dotted his upper body and his right eye was missing, a large scar keeping it closed. He has seen many battles. At least he was wearing pants. Lillian shuddered, she’s walked in on enough warriors training naked by accident. Why? She does not know. The younger warrior had yet to see a battle, but there was an odd scar reaching over his left shoulder. As if something flexible hit him. Possibly a whip, she estimated. Shaking her head, she dismounted and smiled softly. “Kaira…You forgot to put on your shoes” Holding out the slippers, she approached Kaira. “But teacher…I like feeling the ground beneath my feet”

“You’ll catch a cold” Lillian said in a stern tone. “Put them on”

“Yes Mistress” Kaira said in a defeated tone, taking her shoes and plopping on the ground to put them on.

Lillian sighed, shaking her head and turning to face the two men with a smile on her face. “Thank you for rescuing my apprentice. We are in your debt.”

“Oh no, no. It was no problem. We were glad to have been of some assistance. My name is Rokue Kishimoto, second in command of Red Moon” He said, bowing respectfully and then motioned to the younger man. “This is my student, Ixion Valerious” He too bowed.

“A pleasure to meet the two of you. I am Lillian Yang, Great Mage of Azuleria and this is my apprentice Kaira Lafayett” Lillian blinked when Rokue stared at her with wide eyes. “What?”

Rokue stood up in a flash as he continued to stare at Lillian with shock and confusion. Surely this young woman cannot be the leader of Lunalesca and representative of Faye, realm of the elves, fairies and pixies. “My lady…” He started, but Lillian interrupted him. “Don’t you start…Just call me Lillian, after all, this is an informal meeting.” Rokue shook his head as he looked over the woman before him. She seemed young, mid-twenties maybe. Her black hair was short in the back and long in the front, sky blue eyes and her Lunalesca cloak hid the rest of her. He was curious and wanted to know more about her. ‘Whoa!’ With a mental slap, he turned to Ixion and handed him Daisy’s reigns. “Come, we will escort you and the young one too” Lillian nodded in thanks and handed the reigns of her horse to him. Gathering their packs once again, they headed down a clear path east of the forest.

“If I may ask…Why are the two of here?” Ixion asked, looking at Kaira, who was walking next to him. She was staring into space, only to trip and fall flat onto her face. He quickly helped her up, only to raise a brow at her grinning smile. Why is she grinning? Wiping the dirt from her mouth, she hopped once to stand in front of him and started to walk backwards with her hands behind her. She really was an odd one. “Mistress said that I’m going to finish my training by getting my staff” She said without missing a beat. Ixion nodded, thinking over what he knew about mages. Mage’s in training start at age seven till they turn seventeen, making her a year younger than him. Once they reach that age, they go on a journey, performing a ritual in the last place they visit. Which is Terra. Mages do not receive their staffs till then. What he was curious about, is what kind of training they go through. Can’t be as hard as warrior or archer training, could it? “I’m quite excited about it. Getting my staff with show others what kind of mage I am” Kaira said, her smile faltering a bit. “Although, I don’t want to get my staff” She then turned around and ran over to Lillian, grabbing her hand. Like a mother and child. Ixion was confused.

‘Why would she say that?’

I usually dont like this type of scifi, but you won me over some how. I stuck through the whole thing and actually liked. I like the cliff hanger towards the end, makes me wonder if receiving her staff would some how be a bad thing like her being evil and if she’s purposely being a clutz just to fail.

First one to save the damsel in distress gets a free dinner, loser pays-I would get rid of that line…me as a reader and also your characters understood what you meant already…kind of pointless mentioning it.
