Lyrics / "You Don't Have To Ask"

I ONCE KNEW A GIRL WHO OWNED A LEMONADE STAND SHE WAS A BEAUTIFUL WOMAN WHO TOLD STORIES WITH HER HANDS
SHE HAD FRECKLES ON HER FACE
SALT AND PEPPER HAIR
LOOKED LIKE DEAD DANDILIONS
FLOATING THROUGH THE AIR

HER NAME WAS TESS AND SHE WAS FIFTY YEARS OLD
BUT A BLIND MAN COULD SEE
SHE HAD A HEART OF GOLD
WE FELL IN LOVE IN THE AUGUST OF 72
WE’D HOLD HANDS AND WALK FOR HOURS AT THE ZOO
AND I’D ALWAYS COME TO THE STAND
ASK FOR A GLASS
SHE’D ALWAYS REPLY

“YOU DON’T HAVE TO ASK”

OUR LOVE WAS STRONG AS THE DAYS WERE LONG
WE USED TO SIT ON THE PORCH AND MAKE UP SONGS
AND AFTER WE WERE MARRIED WE JUST PURCHASED SOME LAND BECAUSE SHE ALWAYS SAID THAT I WAS A BACK YARD MAN
ON OUR FIRST VACATION WE WENT TO CANCUN
GOT SUNBURNT
SPENT IT IN THE HOTEL ROOM
I SOON FOUND OUT THAT TESS WAS PERVERTED
AND I WAS NERVOUS AT FIRST
BUT SOON WAS CONVERTED

BUT I’D NEVER DENY SHE WAS A WOMAN WITH CLASS
I’D ASK DO YOU LOVE ME?

“YOU DON’T HAVE TO ASK”

WE’D WAKE UP IN THE MORNING TO THE ORANGE COUNTRY SUN
AND SHE’D WHISPER IN MY EAR… “LET’S HAVE SOME FUN”
WE’D RUN AROUND WILD AND PLAY IN THE FOUNTAIN
GAZE FOR HOURS AT THE APPALACIAN MOUNTAINS
AND HER LEMONADE STAND HAD TURNED INTO A FRANCHISE
SHE PULLED BACK THE CURTAIN AND SAID “SURPRISE”

AND I COULDN’T FATHOM JUST HOW LUCKY I WAS
I’D ASK WHY SHE LOVED ME AND SHE’D SAY “BECAUSE”

WE’D ROLL AROUND IN THE HAY
AND MAKE LOVE ALL DAY
WHEN DINNER ROLLED AROUND WE’D HAVE LOTS TO SAY
TESS SURE COULD COOK
THOUGH HER JOINT’S WERE BAD
AT NIGHT SOMETIMES SHE WOULD GET REAL SAD
AT TIMES I WOULD REALIZE SHE WAS MUCH OLDER THAN I
SHE SAID “LIFE WENT BY IN THE BLINK OF AN EYE”

AND WHEN SHE DIED, I LET HER PASS
I BURIED HER UNDERNEATH THE GRASS
I JUST KISSED THE GROUND
AND SAID SO LONG
BUT IN TRUTH, THE DEAD ARE NEVER REALLY GONE

WE FELL IN LOVE IN THE AUGUST OF 72
WE’D HOLD HANDS AND WALK FOR HOURS AT THE ZOO – this rhyme seems forced.  Remove the whole thing before you have to force a rhyme like ‘72’ and ‘zoo’, and going to the zoo repeatedly seems like an odd thing for a couple to do together.  I mean once, okay, I get it.  But if that’s your primary activity together.. what, are they retired zookeepers?

Other than that this is pretty awesome.  If I heard this to a folksy or country style tune I think I’d be cheering after it was done; strong details, sweet story, and it seems somewhat realistic.  Making the older woman a freak in the sack is a refreshing dose of realism and takes this out of the realm of “old man misses older woman” sappiness.

Oh but, for future reference.. try not to post these in all caps.  It is the first thing I noticed and I expected this to be awful.  It isn’t though, so good work.

hi, i like the title and and though pervert/and convert are fresh new ryhmes…they don’t sound right in a love song…it has alot of images throughout..in bed, cooking…fooling around..as you mentioned…which is good but i think it may be to long to be a song..you’d have to shorten in up to fit that 3-4 mintute format..it’s to bad she had to die at the end…cause most people don’t like sad endings…but that is a part of life…but like you said..your never really gone…trim the fat on this and it’ll be a better song…jim

I have noticed this trend within my own writing and several others that I have come across. The Bridge: that is the border between song and poem, where does one end and the other begin?

Favorite line :
“I JUST KISSED THE GROUND
AND SAID SO LONG
BUT IN TRUTH, THE DEAD ARE NEVER REALLY GONE

“WE’D ROLL AROUND
IN THE HAY
AND MAKE LOVE ALL DAY” Seems kind of redundant to mention two phrases of sexual occurrences but it brings home the point precisely.

I was wondering what genre of music this is? It helps to know therefore I might be a little more critically constructive.
