Journalism / Battle Royale
Superbowl number thirty four. The year is two thousand nine and two of the strongest tribes are at war. The Pittsburg Steelers and The Arizona Cardinals are locked in the epic combat of America's most sacred ritual. Mano a Mano in the most sacred of American traditions.
The game became an almost operatic drama. With euphoric highs and devastating lows for each side. This was a game for the record books. Dreams were shattered. Heroes were made.
In these times of political confusion and economic panic, our nation desperately needed a unifying ceremony such as this one. It strengthens our resolve and brings us together as a people.
The figureheads of this ancient tradition are clear: Ben Roethlisberger, James Harrison. Kurt Warner if your a cardinals fan. But it is Santonio Holmes who is this year's MVP. And it is he who is our champion. It is Santonio Holmes carried the steelers into glory and a 27-23 victory over the cardinals with a miraculous catch in the last 35 seconds of the game.
A very dramtic ending to a phenomenal game. With overtones of extreme national tension encouraging everyone to do their very best. We needed a definitive victory like this to get our heads straight. You would have to be a fool not to appreciate the significance this game will have on our county's morale.
And we are in desperate need of morale in these turbulent times. Immediately following the superbowl was the evening news. National sports icon Micheal Phelps was photographed smoking marijuana at a party with friends. A prison riot erupted in Pecos, Texas that resulted in hostages being taken and the rec room being set on fire. Ominous thunder echoes outside in between the glamorous 3d commercials designed to distract us. Its as if the thunder is reminding us of the matters at hand: National heroes exposed as drug addicts, prison riots, an economic crisis threatening to engulf us all. And, as always, the lurking shadowy threat of the war in iraq is never far from our minds.
It is critical, in these strange times, that we take the true message of the superbowl to heart: unity. Stand strong as a people and weather the storm. Hold on tight and pray for change.

The fact that you don’t know technical sports is exactly what makes this article enjoyable to someone like me. We can all connect with the greater message. And your love of mankind shines though – it has been a hard couple of years.
thanks.
