Poetry / Symbiogenesis

Symbiogenesis

Flesh is a garment
That we wear
For our children.

For once a prokaryote engulfed a cyanobacteria
And unconsumed, it became part of a whole,
Providing the chloroplasts of the plant cells.

For once a prokaryote engulfed an aerobes bacterium
And unconsumed, it became a part of a whole,
Providing the mitochondria of our animal cell.

For it is cooperation, not competition, which drives our evolution.
Let the Neo-Darwinist fight it out,
While we trade our genetic information on an open exchange
To the satisfaction of the concerned parties.

Symbiogenesis

Flesh is a garment
That we wear
For our children.

For once a prokaryote engulfed a cyanobacteria
And unconsumed it became part of a whole,
Providing the chloroplasts of the plant cells.

For once a prokaryote engulfed an aerobes bacterium
And unconsumed it became a part of a whole,
Providing the mitochondria of our animal cell.

Doctor Margulis has proven our Symbiogenesis,
When these formless bacteria cooperated to clothe the first cell.
Contraire, that serpent Doctor Dawkin learned his biology out behind the school house.

So let the little Corporals fight it out,
While we trade our genetic information on an open exchange
To the satisfaction of the concerned parties.

For it is cooperation, not competition,
Which drives our evolution.
Poor little Adolf could have remained an artist
If the Social Darwinist had not consumed him.

a mingling of the two with a different formatting would convey the message more readily. if forced to choose, i prefer the former version, less contention.
as an aside, use of “of” as in constructed from, within…
problematic for me. perhaps lacking the intonation behind the words?
diatoms, radiolaria, buckey’s balls are everywhere in nature.

The first “best supports” your position.  But it’s not a very complete explanation as to why that theory is not compatible with other evolutionary theory.

However, having read both, I am left thinking that both cooperation and competition work simultaneously, and neither concept is mutually exclusive.  So, I don’t see the need for the “swipe” at Dawkins, and I think it undercuts the point of Margulis’ theory by making a pointless and unsubstantiated dig at Dawkins.

First of all, I must say that I think it’s great. Interesting and well written.

I think the fourth verse in the second version is simply unnecessary, but the third is good, so I’d advice you to combine the two versions—basically, chose the second one but without its fourth verse.

It sounds like you’re mad, or jealous of another person’s dreams. It sounds like you envy this person, and to what this person seems natural to wear to you is up high very difficult to reach, very upset that you’re not getting your way, very selfish, your eyes are blinded and choose not to see the truth, your’re upset, like this other person didn’t do anything to you, this person probably is in your side, and maybe you should give this person a chance, become a team and help one another, is probably just a misunderstanding, and the more I read I see that this person in on your side, maybe give him a little part-time job, something like that.

Other than that is a masterpiece, I like the way you put things, you leave a lot of room for creativity, definitely a real work of art, if you got more writing let us seee it, it was a real honor for you share this unique criteria.

What an interesting piece!

“Poor little Adolf could have remained an artist
If the Social Darwinist had not consumed him.”

What fantastic lines!  You have a very interesting take on evolution—this is certainly a subject I have never seen introduced by poetry, so well done on being so original.

I much preferred the second one.  I got to admit though the context of this piece really left me in the dust.  I still remember a little of high school biology but I can really imagine the scene playing out.

Best of luck.

The first version is definitely better. I’m distracted in the second by the sudden shift from science to politics. And you are correct in your introduction; it does defeat the purpose of your poem by dwelling on competition between scientists when your point is that cooperation wins over competion. The first version flows well, and gets your point across nicely.

I had to look up the term so that I understood what you were talking about, so right there you can see that I’m no expert in the field of evolution.  I do believe in it and I do think that there is something to what Dawkins says in his books about competition spreading genetic material and that competition is the engine that drives evolution.

That being said, I can still accept new ideas if those new ideas aren’t cloaked in ad hominem attacks.  When you say that Dawkins learned his biology behind the schoolhouse that’s not constructive and it doesn’t advance your arguments.  Therefore the second of these items is a non-starter for me.  It should be erased if you are trying to make a valid point.

You imply that there is a satisfaction through cooperative exchange of genetic material, which sounds like organisms are aware of such facts.  Do you really want to leave that in there?  Otherwise, if you want to make an argument here maybe you should exchange this for essay form and cite sources.

It’s hard for me to critique this one because my background in science is limited. As poems, both work. However, needing more info on science, I could not tell you which is better than the other. Sorry. But good work.
