Journal, Diary, & Blogging / All A-Twitter (Analysis)

Just as I thought I was getting into the swing of things by joining and participating in Facebook, I find out that I’m already behind the curve. The cool kids, apparently, are all about Twitter now. For those of you unfamiliar with this social networking website, it seems to be a place where one can read the random neural firings of Ashton Kutcher or Matthew Broderick without having to wait for the latest edition of People magazine to hit the news stands.

Why, you might ask, do I care what celebrities (or regular everyday people, for that matter) have to say in seven word bites? I don’t. Really. I don’t care. I just went on to see what the People are writing about today. I got a weather report from Berlin (don’t care), musings about how cool this technology is (don’t care), and a report that other people are just reading the same crap that I just read.

Now I will be the first to admit that my attention span ain’t what it used to be (thank you 80’s MTV!!) but seriously, I AM able to read more than half a sentence at a time without my train of thought being derailed. Hell, sometimes I can read a whole book! With no pictures in it or anything!

And even if I get with the cool kids on Twitter, I now know that I am not Skyping! (it sounds kinda dirty but it isn’t!) So between blogging, Facebooking, Twittering and Skyping…. How the hell is anyone supposed to work or sleep or procreate? And if I find time to do those things, now I have to update the world on those activities via twelve different technologies! It’s exhausting!

So now I’m going to go to the gym and work out some of my technology aggression in an old fashioned way. But when I get home, you’ll be the first to know how my workout went! Just read my blog/facebook page/twitter account! I’ll update you!

Nicely written and easy to understand for a blog. The message came across clearly and the writer’s sense of narrative skill was obvious. I say this because of the natural way the experience was shared to the reader. The writer first shared his experience with his/her peers:

“I find out that I’m already behind the curve. The cool kids, apparently, are all about Twitter now.”

This sets the premise for the rest of the story. The next paragraph mentions the writer’s position on the topic. She questions why she should care about celebrity updates, Berlin weather (possibly because it doesn’t affect her directly).

The prose brings out an interesting point on society’s obsession with the internet and social networking in general. It makes the reader think and ask the same question ‘why?’

The only thing I think this text can improve on is the last paragraph where the writer has transformed from what she initially disdain (mundane information, 20 different technologies to post) into the ‘cool kids’ culture. I think the transformation was wonderful but came in too abrupt. An additional setup as to why she’s choosing the path would’ve made the prose more powerful and will leave the reader with an ‘ahh’ feeling.

Thanks for sharing.

This was good, it had an element of sarcasm/ playfulness to it rather than being a straight up, serious rag on Twitter. The ending sentence was especially humorous, because the joke about updating the world of your workout peaked how you feel about the site(s). Also, from reading this, you have furthered my desire -Not- to join such website. Thank you.

“Skyping…. How the” A period at the end of the sentence isn’t needed when it ends with three dots. Perhaps change it to ‘Skyping… How the’ or even lowercase the H in how and put a coma between them.
