Poetry / Becky Thatcher
Lying on the edge of the flowery lake
Her hair flowed like currents of soft autumn hues
And smoky lashes bordered
Her sparkling green eyes
I kissed her under the tree
Where we carved our names in time
Where the old tire swing hung
And lobbed us into the lake every summer
On the same patch of grass
Where I memorized
Every freckle constellation on her cheeks
And every orange fleck inside her eyes
Across from the bridge
Where she dangled her feet
Over the cool, misty water
And proposed to me
When we were four years old
As the heat surged from the tips of her lips to mine,
I knew she was the same strawberry blonde girl
Who sat next to me in kindergarten,
In the wooden schoolhouse,
And blew me secret kisses in church
Her face lit up a rosy shade of pink
And the setting sun flickered when she smiled
My fingers forged a path
Down the small of her back
While my mouth rolled down her shoulder
In sweet silence
And after all the love we made,
Her head nestled in my neck,
She said “I love you”
In the sleepiest voice
And sighed softly on my chest
Every star in the glittery sky
Was reflected
On the blue-black lake
And I named each one
After a child we would have
I loved her in the quiet way only I knew I could
The love you keep all to yourself
Because there is no way to explain
And I laughed
At how bad I knew my heart could break
But hoped it wouldn’t

this poem is great. i love it because the imagery is so consistent and so vivid. You paint the image very clearly and I can almost see through your eyes what you see in this girl. The flashbacks were also smooth and did not seem forced, which is a trend i see in a lot of other poems. the last stanza also added an extra emotion, and expressed how you wanted to protect your heart buy you know you cant. To me this is an orgasm in words. Seriously.
