Neon blew at a spider web
Just to watch a spider dance
The comic in me wants to say it did the Macarena,
because spiders are helplessly out of date.
The poet in me wants to say that Neon will always have younger side,
curious about the world around her.
The cynic in me doesn’t give a shit and wants to know why I’m writing this.
The comic sees a spider who suddenly understands mimes
(wow, this IS what a strong wind feels like).
The poet sees confusion and struggle.
The cynic questions my masculinity.
The comic sees a little spider weather reporter
warning other spiders to stay indoors.
The poet sympathizes with a bad analogy.
The cynic wonders why this has become a list bit.
We drive home together,
The comic listening to the radio.
The poet staring out at everything.
The cynic leaning out the window and yelling at traffic.
The poet takes advantage of the lean and just kicks him right out.
The comic looks over at the poet and says
“good one.”
I watch the cynic roll away in my rearview.
He complains about various things (that’s his job)
but I just keep driving.
Sometimes I miss that guy.
