Journalism / Let Freedom Ring
Let freedom ring, but don't let the bell of liberty hit you in the head.
"...under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all". Okay I have a few questions about this? The questions are rhetorical to inspire some thought and hopefully trigger an understanding of why our country struggles with the pitfalls and potholes of privilege.
Under what God? I guess that one question sort of answers the next; Are we truly indivisible?
I can't help but wonder, if everyone has liberty, can everyone have justice?
Sometimes I try to figure these things out, and yes I have formed my own opinions. Then I ponder the philosophical and analytical opinions of our modern day wise men (and women). These questions have divided even them.
Did our forefathers who wanted to give us "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" have any idea what power the word liberty held and how easily it could be contorted?
People behave as if liberty gives them special privilages in life. When they aren't content with exercising liberty in their own lives are often trying to exercise their liberty in someone elses. So much for indivisible. Do you know people who take liberty with your time, money, property or identification? Did these people get shorted at the liberty line and now they have to take from others? Where's the justice in that?
There are many ways which liberty can be taken. Individual to individual, Government to individual, Society to individual , and individual to society. Why should any individual or public entity be allowed to take any part of liberty belonging to a law abiding citizen.
I believe we wouldn't have to pursue happiness, or worry about justice for all, if we didn't have to worry about protecting our liberties. We'll never agree about what God we are under and ironically liberty has made us indivisible, yet still, divided.
