Flash Fiction / Jonathan's Story
Lying naked in the grass with only the sky overhead, Jonathan let out a long, held in sigh. He closed his eyes and felt the sun warm his skin, tan from the days of swimming and chasing ice cream trucks. He had no fear of being discovered here, all those who may have come along this way were busy working in big cities and typing at keyboards. The last of the children in the area had left only a little after Jonathan had; around the time his brother had left for college. Only he had returned to the spot where they had spent their child hood.
With great effort, he pulled his upper body into a sitting position. Next to him, warm and dreamy, lay his girlfriend, Kendra. She was lying on her back, her sun kissed skin all but glittering in the bright, midday light. Her long blond hair was spread out over the blades of grass, salty and thick. Next to her head lay the wooden popsicle sticks and wrappers from the ice creams they had devoured.
Jonathan smiled as he remembered the wrappers’ origins. He and Kendra had just returned from the beach when they heard the faint, unmistakable tinkling of an ice cream truck. She had grinned at him, showing her white, perfect teeth, and grabbed his hand. Together they had ran, almost sprinted, down the street in pursuit of the small white vehicle. Now, hours later, her face still showed the sticky remnants of the ice cream. Even with an orange mouth, she looked perfect.
He loved that about her. He loved everything about her. Her passion for life, how her face would light up like a child’s when he kissed her nose, her long, beautiful legs that were constantly in motion: running, skipping, jumping for joy. Having her with him now was what he wanted his forever to look like. He loved her because she was his. They belonged to no one but each other.
As he gazed at her sleeping face, a small yellow butterfly drifted down from a nearby tree. It circled the large expanse of green, fluttering between the long strands of grass, before finally alighting upon Kendra’s forehead. Tempted by the sweet aroma of her sugar coated lips and cheeks, the creature crept down over her nose and settled on her lower lip. Jonathan held his breath as the butterfly unfurled it’s long, delicate tongue and reached down to taste her creamsicle-stained mouth; the same mouth that he had kissed only moments before.
Kendra pursed her lips gently and opened her eyes, bright and blue against the yellow of the insect’s wings. She crossed her eyes to stare straight into the face of the small being who had chosen her as its perch. For a few moments, they stared at one another before the butterfly spread its wings and lifted off. Both Jonathan and Kendra watched as it rose up into the air, like a small patch of sunshine dancing in the sky. Their eyes followed the flight of the butterfly until it disappeared into the horizon.
Kendra was the first to come back to earth. She looked up into his eyes and smiled, “Hey,” she murmured. “Hey,” he said back. She reached up behind his head, knotting her fingers in his brown hair, and pulled him towards her. Her lips held his as they both fell back into the grass. Neither were thinking of the past or the future. All that mattered was the here and the now and the forever.

Okay, to be honest, the first thing about this that caught my eye was the name Jonathan and it’s spelling. That is my brothers name and most people spell it Johnathan. :] The story was great. I love how detailed everything. It was as if I were reading a book with pictures. The images were almost real. Good job. :]
I really loved reading this. Personally, ive always wanted to just lay in grass and not have to worry about anyone coming and disturbing my peace there. This just made me want to know more about Jonathan and Kendra like how they got together, things they did before this day, etc. Really nice.
