Horror / Awakening

“60 miles per hour, this is great but I need more.” The 1967 Stingray Convertible clung to the curve, like a red fox darting in and out of bushes.
“I can’t believe this! No more hiding in the shadows after I make my kills.  No more hiding in the shadows at all! 200 years of living in terror of what they would do to me if caught.  Those damned priests always spreading their hatred of my kind.”
“How was it my fault? Nature chose some of us to evolve and now they are no longer at the top of the food chain.  Does the cow go around ritualistically slaughtering all humans for fear that they be eaten? No, they accept their lot in life.  But to live now, in this time and feel safe?  This is something even beyond the oldest ones dreams!  Till two hours ago I would not have conceived of this but now, after eighty years of waiting in slumber, I awaken to a whole new world of possibilities!”

“70 miles per hour…even in my full strength, I was barely able to reach this speed!”  The car was a blur of red and chrome, getting perilously close to the edge of the road as it went ever faster into the late evening.
“But now it is all possible.  How I loved the look on that woman’s face when she realized what I was.  They made us a thing of faerie tales and nightmares but something deep inside her made her realized that those faerie tales were true.  I almost felt sorry for her; for them all.  But then why should I?  They pushed us, all of us to the edges of existence.  Let me start repaying the debt owed.”

“80 miles per hour; I wonder how fast can this car go?” The needle danced up and down the speedometer moving to the right in jagged starts.  The car screeched around corners as the tires threatened to give way.
“The freedom I have now is immeasurable.  My home can be any place I can secure without the light of day to assault me.  Everything I could ever want is at my fingertips.  The streets are crawling with willing victims and it seems like places were even made to help my kind find them and dispose of them all the easier.  Dance clubs, bars, theaters, restaurants, morgues and so many more places, all opened at night; all night.”
“They do not even believe in my kind anymore! Not even the clergy, which for so many years hunted us down at every turn.  Every dawn threatening to be our last.  My poor Isabella…If she could have just lasted one more century.”

“95 miles per hour, must go faster, push harder!”  As he floored the gas, the pedal gave out with a crunch and so did a bit of the floorboard beneath it.  The pedal was firmly entrenched in the floor and there was no chance of slowing, albeit he did not mean to do that anyway.  The odometer looked like a casino slot machine, the numbers spinning faster and with more purpose.
“Oh how I wish she was here with me now.  She would have appreciated the irony of this time.  How she would have taken advantage as only one like she could.  The last century had been too hard for many of us to bear; the great cleansing had occurred as a result of the hopelessness felt throughout the world.  I still remember the dawn she had gone into the sun’s light.”
”105 miles per hour…faster.” “I thought there was not an ounce of human compassion in her, like me.  How could I have been so blind?”  The car clipped a curve and bounced to one side, he, dazed, grabbed a hold of the wheel and straightened the car back up and went back to his brooding.
“No, no she was weak.  I must not ere.  I am strong and in this time I will be invincible!”
A loud boom sounds throughout the car as it tilts heavily toward its front right tire.  “Wait, no…what’s going o-“, but he cannot finish that sentence because no sooner did he utter those words that the car careened off the road in a jumble of steel.  Every roll and bounce was crushing the car, while bone ground into itself and reverberated against the steel.  What was once a sports car was now a ball of metal and memories that slow came to a stop.    There, for two hours, the vampire lay still; his numerous injuries dropping him into a sleeplike state while the blood slowly worked at repairing all.  But try as it might, the blood felt that something was amiss and tried in vain to correct the problem but eventually gave up.  Slowly the vampire awoke from his stupor and immediately realized that quite a bit of time had past.
“Hmmm, that was quite a ride.  Time is of the essence though.  I will worry about the car later.” As he lifted up, his hands gave way and he fell flat on his face.  He tried again but with the same results.  He felt an unusual amount of pain, which is something his kind still felt but to a much smaller degree than we can imagine.  But this burning pain was coming from his legs.
“NO!!!!!!!!! NO NO NO! HOW? NO,” he let out as he stared down at the stumps that were once his legs.  He frantically looked around for them, the blood could reattach them in mere minutes if they were near.  His eyes came to rest on the two humps further down the road, attached to the dashboard.  They were about a hundred yards out and he may have had a chance to reach them.  He may have had a chance for a lot of things, to be powerful, rich, live out of hiding without fear of anyone and anything.  He may have had a chance, if it wasn’t for the piercings of light that were coming out over the horizon like icy blades come to greet him.
He leans back and as the sky begins to lighten over the tops of the trees, he wonders how much pain she felt.  He takes one last look at his legs, flopping around and eyes the dash clock blinking 6:08 AM.  As he closes his eyes, he feels the first rays of light wash over him and the last thing he here before the pain overtakes him is the static on the radio clearing out.
“It’s a beautiful Sunday morning folks with the sun coming up at 6:10AM; not a cloud in the sky.  I think it is going to be a very sunny day…”
