Short Story / A Place Only Nightmares Take You (Analysis)
The chairs were a nasty faded peach color. The walls were teal and only matched the chairs in ugliness. The people were nice enough. She was reminded of some obscure 80’s movie scene. The chairs were so closely put together that she couldn’t help but wonder what this place might look like with twenty people packed in… like that would ever happen…
This place..was not the most comforting. This place is only for them, those that reap consequences for bad decisions. She was a good girl. Made good choices. At least, she thought. This was not the place for her.
“Are you ok?” the words were played back to her as if his mouth was moving on its own accord but the words were slow in coming. They sounded like a phony old record player in slow motion. She nodded with big eyes and looked straight ahead. Her eyes were the size of big round bubblegum balls. Her vision was blurry and spinning. Her only focus was an advertisement on the wall with a happy, smiling mother and a little child held in her arms. She imagined herself escaping and jumping into that picture, strolling with the mother and child.. laughing about silly things..
The door opened with a moan and her imaginary world was ripped out from beneath her.
She could feel her heart beating fast in her palms and temples. Her chest felt as if a big steel-toed boot had crushed all the air out of her lungs. Her feet were warm and shot fire through her bloodstream. Her veins were hot with anxiety. Her thoughts swarmed in a million directions all beginning with “What if..” She turned with all her might to look at him and stared. She had almost wished she had come to endure this alone.. She knew how ridiculous she must appear. Was this really that big a deal anyway?
He looked at her.. there was confusion in his eyes. He reached for her hand. Slowly, a warm ball of peace flowed through her beating palm. She took a deep breath and forced air into her lungs. She was not so sorry he had come after all. He was her saving grace.
She relaxed and let fate take its course.
