Children's / Mr. Rolypoly's Wish (Analysis)
Mr. Rolypoly had many wishes, but his greatest
wish was to fly. Each morning he sat outside
his soda can home and watched the eagles fly.
One morning as the eagles disappeared from
sight, Mr. Rolypoly curled into a ball and
rolled down to the Slug-bug café. Inside, all
the bugs talked over a hot cup of gooey green
slime.
Mr. Roly-poly rolled in and asked
everyone, “Does anyone know how I could fly?”
The bugs stared at him before they roared
with laughter.
“You can’t fly. You’re much of a peewee!”
Mr. Grasshopper taunted.
“You need wonderful wings like mine to fly,”
Ms. Fly bragged.
“Don’t wish!” grouchy old Mrs. Beetle
snapped. “You know they don’t come true.”
Mr. Rolypoly knew wishes came true, if he
believed in them.
Back home, he grabbed a big batch of sticks
and leaves. He stomped on blueberries, making
sticky blueberry jam. He used the jam to glue
the sticks and leaves together, creating a hand-
glider.
“Perfect!” Mr. Rolypoly cheered.
He fasten the hand-glider onto his back and
hurried to an old oak tree. He took a long,
slow breath before climbing it.
Up high, Mr. Rolypoly peeked down to the
ground. His body shivered with fear.
“Have courage and anything is possible,” he
told himself.
He tiptoed to the edge of a tree limb and
one of his feet lost its step. Mr. Rolypoly
fell!
A gust of wind whooshed by catching Mr.
Rolypoly in the air. His hand-glider began to
glide gracefully. Mr. Rolypoly flew! In vivid
sight, he saw the peaks of small hills; the vast
chestnut-colored land, and the rushing velvet
blue river.
“Beautiful,” Mr. Rolypoly said.
A fierce gust of wind whooshed by cracking
Mr. Rolypoly’s hand-glider in half. He plunged
down from the sky heading for the river. As it
came closer, Mr. Rolypoly flapped his broken
hand-glider wings as fast as he could. Nearly
on top of the river, he soared up again. He
flapped the hang-glider wings faster and enjoyed
the glide.
Then he began to get weary. He looked below and
found a place to land. He swirled down lower
and lower and landed into the soft grass field.
He looked up in the sky and saw an eagle flying
toward the sun.
“Wishes do come true,” he said as he curled
himself and rolled his way back home.

Wow, I wish I could write like that, I write poetry, you might want to critique my poetry because I have one about a candy cotton dream, anyway, I just read this story to my 8 year old daughter, and we both Loved It. It would be an adorable children’s book. Great job. Keep writing. And thank you.
