Poetry / Rainy Day Lullabye
Tap

Listen.
Can you hear it?
A stranger’s teardrops
Caressing your window?
So lovely.
Tick
Tick
Tick
Bedside clock
Without a chime
Forever counting down
Seconds in your failing life.
So pretty
So lovely
So perfect.
Scratch
Scratch
Scratch.
Hear that, dear?
That’s the sound
Of subconscious escape.
Fingernails of
Bound hands
Scraping uselessly
At the headboard.
Why, they’re yours.
Shh
Shh
Shh.
Sharpen the blade
It must be perfect,
Must cut clean.
No more stains
No more tainting perfection.
...
No?
But I must.
Try to escape,
I tear you apart,
Piece by piece by piece.
You signed the contract
With a runny pen.
Tap
Tick
Scratch
Shh.
Everything’s fine.
Perfect
Wonderful…
One
Two
Three.
Finger
Hand
Arm.
Is that enough?
So much blood
So much noise.
Does it hurt?
Good.
Never run
Never disobey,
You’ll never hurt.
Shh…
Listen.
Sleep to
This rainy day lullabye…

Whew, goosebumps. I only rate the “publishable” low because the subject matter would be too rough for many. Really well written.
