“HEARTBROKEN PROMISES”
Sherry Shumard
Chapter 1
As Miranda stared out the window on the bus she was daydreaming. She pictured her new life with her lying on the beach and sipping little umbrella drinks with no care in the world. She had a job lined up as a hair salon manager on Jake’s Island and would be living in one of the cottages there free of charge. She snapped out of her daydream when she heard the gentlemen sitting next to her ask “Aren’t the mountains beautiful?”
She looked over at him noticing him for the first time since she had gotten on the bus. He had dark hair and a dark mustache and oddly enough he had baby blue eyes. “Yes, the mountains are beautiful.”
Miranda put her fingers through her thick dishwater blond hair. She was sweating. It was hot on the bus. The air conditioner definitely wasn’t working. Great, she thought. They were traveling south and it would only get hotter. It was the middle of July. Maybe she should have stayed and tried to work things out with her boyfriend-ok, ex-boyfriend. But she didn’t see what difference it would have made. She was running away. It was her first trip ever. Her blue eyes sparkled as she looked out the window at the view before her. The mountains were huge. She had never seen any mountains before. The sight was truly breathtaking. The road the bus was traveling on winded around the mountains. She gulped when she looked down because it seemed to her that the road was very narrow. It would be a long way down if the bus made one wrong turn.
“Are you alright?” “What?” she asked.
“You shivered. Are you scared?” “I was just thinking that if this bus went over the edge, then it would be a long way down.” He laughed. “I’m sorry. We’ll be fine I assure you.” “By the way, my name is Lee Jamison.” “Don’t worry you’re safe with me and the bus driver is familiar with these roads and he isn’t going very fast.”
She looked into his eyes and then she had to look away. There was something about his eyes and the way he was looking at her. He probably thought that she was a big baby and was scared of everything. “My name is Miranda,” she said.
“So where are you heading?” he asked.
She replied, “I’m going to Jake’s Island because I have a job there as a manager at the hair salon on the island.”
“Oh,” he said.
“I’ve actually got some business to do there this summer.” “Maybe I’ll run into you there.” “Maybe,” She closed her eyes and lay back in her seat.
She was wondering if she had made the right decision. Should she have stayed and faced Dane? She was fighting with her decision to leave her family and friends in Illinois. Her destination was south from her previous home. She would be starting over and running away from the only life she had ever known. Even though life had dealt her a cruel hand. Her ex-boyfriend Dane had made things intolerable. She couldn’t face him ever again. He had cheated on her for no reason. She couldn’t get past her last memory of him. She had gone to work at her secretarial job and had gotten off of work early since she was feeling sick. She went home to their apartment. She was surprised to see that his truck was parked out front. She went up the two flights of stairs quickly because she was so excited to spend the rest of the day with him. She tried to put her key in the lock but noticed that there were already keys dangling from the lock. That was odd that he would just leave his keys in the door. She tried the door handle and it was already unlocked. She went inside and hollered out his name. When she got no answer she was getting scared. His truck was out front so he should be in there. There was no sign of him in the front room or the kitchen. She looked in the bathroom and he wasn’t in there. Maybe he was sleeping. She opened his bedroom door and stared in shock and disbelief. There he was in their bed with another woman. She threw his keys at them and ran out of the apartment. She ran down the two flights of stairs and jumped into her car. She never looked back. She didn’t want to talk to him ever. She was startled as she heard a voice say “Wake up blue eyes; you’re at your stop.”
She said “I’m awake.”
She looked out the window and noticed how beautiful it was outside. She sun was shining brightly and the clouds were white and fluffy in the sky. As she stepped off the bus she looked back at the window where she had been sitting and noticed Lee was waving at her from the window. What a nice friend she thought to herself. The island was truly magnificent. There were palm trees everywhere. She got her luggage and hailed a taxi. Her first stop would be at the hair salon to pick up her key to the cottage. After the taxi stopped in front of the hair salon, she went inside and introduced herself. “Hi, I’m Miranda Wainright and I’m here for my key.”
The woman behind the counter said “Nice to meet you. I’m Leanne and I’ll be training you on Monday.” “Your cottage is number 12 and here’s the key.”
Miranda took the key and stepped back into the taxi. She was looking forward to a relaxing weekend of doing nothing. She arrived at her cottage. The cottage was adorable. It was white with blue trim. She opened the door and looked around. In the bedroom the bed had a light green bedspread on it with two fluffy white pillows. There were two cherry night stands on each side of the bed. What a cozy room, she thought. The bathroom was huge and had a shower and a tub in it. The kitchen was small but it would be big enough for her. She had never lived in a small cottage before so this would take some getting used to. This was going to be a great start to her new life. Never again would she trust a man. Never in a million years. She was hungry and decided to go get something to eat. She walked around the island taking in all the sights. It felt great being on her own and doing whatever she wanted to do with no one to answer to. She walked past many restaurants and shops and was very excited about the island. There would be plenty of time to check out the shops later. Right now she was very hungry. She came upon a seafood restaurant and decided that she would stop there. She ordered her food and a mixed drink and took her time eating. After eating, she decided that she would check out some of the shops. She needed to buy some new clothes for work and the beach. After spending a huge sum of money she walked back to her cottage. She was getting tired and decided to take a relaxing bath. She found herself dozing off and got out of the tub. When she was drying off, she heard her phone ringing. Who could be calling her after 11:00 pm? She ran to answer the phone with her towel almost falling off her.
“Hello,” she said.
“Miranda, is that you?” the voice on the other end inquired.
“Who is this?” “Can’t you tell by the sound of my voice?” She was so shocked that she couldn’t say anything for about 30 seconds. “
It’s Dane, my gosh you didn’t forget about me already did you?”
“How did you find me?” she asked. “It wasn’t too hard to track you down. That’s not important right now. I need to talk to you,” he said.
“I have nothing to say to you,” she replied and slammed the phone down.
Her world seemed very unfair right at that moment. She had run away from the only man that she had ever fallen in love with and he had betrayed her. She couldn’t go to sleep because she was trembling so much that her whole body was shaking. She had to go for a walk to clear her head. Should she at least let him explain things? No, she didn’t owe him anything after what he had done. She just realized that she had to get dressed first before she went for a walk. She slipped on a sundress and some sandals and snatched up her key. She walked out into the front of the cottage and went on a path that led to the beach. At least she could do some thinking about her situation. She was so deep into thought that she wasn’t watching where she was going. She ran right into a familiar face. It was Leanne from the salon. “Hi,” Leanne said.
“What’s the matter?” “I can tell that you’re upset.” “I will never ever in a million years trust another man again,” Miranda said and burst into tears.
“It’s going to be alright. Just let it all out.” Leanne was trying to be reassuring.
“I left a bad situation and now he called me tonight wanting to talk to me but I don’t want to,” she explained.
“What did he do to you?” Leanne asked.
“He cheated on me and I caught him in the act.”
“That’s terrible, I don’t blame you for not wanting to talk to him again,” Leanne said. They walked along the beach for over an hour and got to know each other. Leanne gave Miranda a lot of positive advice and it made her feel a lot better about her decision to leave like she did. It was a positive step for Miranda by her starting over with a new life and a new job. Dane had been everything to Miranda throughout their three year relationship and she had fallen in love with him. The pain was almost too much to bear. She found out that Leanne had also been hurt in the past by someone she loved. They both had a lot of things in common. After getting back to her cottage, Miranda told Leanne goodnight. They were both exhausted from their long walk. Miranda fell into a deep sleep just a few minutes after her head hit the pillow.
