Journal, Diary, & Blogging / Perfection (Analysis)

You see them all the time. Magazine covers, runway shows, commercials, popup ads, even within your own memory. Those images of beautiful women that some people may call unrealistic. Perhaps your not at all affected; maybe you see it once and never think of it again until the next five minute commercial break, or the magazine stand you pass on your way to work.

Maybe it all depends on your state of mind. Those with higher self esteem may not at all take it in. Maybe there are people that can look at glossy images of what society views as perfection and can smile and be perfectly happy with themselves. Congradulations to this type of woman.

And then there’s the second type. The type that will look at one picture, then down at her own stomach, arms, chest. And, in that moment of doubt, can set off a self-destructive chain of events.

It’s like a broken tape recorder. ’Are my breasts too big?’ ’Does it make me look fat?’ Changing the outfit three or four times; still not perfect. ’Maybe I should skip breakfast. Smaller lunch, no dinner.’ Starts off so small. And then she’s counting calories, excersing more. Her parents wonder, but don’t ask. They figure it’s just a phase.

Slipping into an ever spiraling painting of a personal hell. Invaded by thoughts that were not there before. Once proud of a B plus, now it’s failure. Failure deserves punishment. So she skips the only meal she’s allowed herself once a day for many weeks.

Ignoring dizzy spells. Ignoring stupid questions. Baggy clothes, polished mirror that she loves and hates. All the little things we shrug at, she obsesses over.

...We never thought she’d be in the hospital. Her mother shakes her head, crying and wondering how this could have happened to her baby. We never thought the 82 pound daughter would be lying there, flowing with tubes and wires and telling everyone she’s fine and can go home, while she’s secretly wanting to do nothing more than situps and running to burn off the liquid calories being pumped into her.

...We never get to see the sick girls. Only the beautiful ones that are inspiring a disease that is an epidemic of American society. Obesity and Eating Disorders are two things Europe and America are famous for. When did we become so focused on food instead of educatio and our futures?

...When did the six year olds start wanting to weigh themselves, asking the question “Mommy, am I fat?”

...Where did it begin? How do we end it?

That journal entry hits home to me, I know so many people who think they are too fat and don’t eat enough, I just want everyone to realize that just because models are skinny, playboy girls are skinny, you should be happy with who you are on the inside and outside no matter who you are and what size of clothes you wear.

You definitely inspire one to think. You have pegged the American way of thinking in your writing.

You make me wonder if this is written from a personal level or if you have don a lot of research for this piece of work.

Definitely inspiring and thought provoking

I think it is a great topic you bring up… so sad and serious. I think you have a skill that needs honing. At 16 you have a lot of deep thoughts.

“Perhaps YOU’RE not at all affected”
“CongraTulations”
There is also a lot of periods that could have just been continued sentences.
Anorexia if very sad and you obviously have a kind, compassionate heart. Keep writing :)

Yet It’s inevitable to suppress/eradicate this metal disease…. But maybe one day it will be seen! n breath like the free breeze that will lead them to see that there’s not an obtuse scene but only a blinding thing…

Very nice piece. Goes straight to the heart of the matter. Causes reader to ask serious questions of themselves and society as a whole. Definitely should continue writing. You have a great gift for conveying your ideas to the reader.

I really liked this even though its a subject that has been touched upon a lot its always nice to look at it from a personal angle, and we do have to question or image concious mentalities, not evryone is confident within themselves, and we have to really start tackling this confidence issue, because only when we adress society and the pressures it puts on people, whther subconcious or otherwise, then we will solve the problems of eatin disorders and the like that you mention, well done and thanks a lot for the request, i really enjoyed reading, thank you =D…goo 16 year olds :P

Hi,

You’ve gone straight to the heart of a problem that is growing worse by the day. This article is a perfect description of how bulimia nervosa begins. Some young men are afflicted with the disease but it’s much more prevalent in girls and young women. And it’s no wonder. Just as you said, advertising in all forms, extols the slim female body, implying that if one weights over 100 pounds, then he or she will not get the shiny new car, the high salary career or the perfect mate.

The skinny models in the slick advertising are not, as we all know, normal, but to a young girl who might think she is a bit overweight, they are an invitation to disaster.

I noticed only one typo and it’s minor; “educatio” for “education”.

You’ve done a good job on this journal and I like how you get to the point without a lot of fluff.

Two typos: Education and congratulations.

This is a thought-provoking piece. This topic is definitely one that needs to be talked about. Have you any plausible solutions, or is this a musing? You have added some nice depth and emotion to your writing. :)

This is certainly an extremely important topic for women who read these types of magazines. Being 24 years old, I still remember the image issues I faced in high school when I looked at these beautiful skinny women in magazines and wondered when I could look like that. It has taken years to reach the point where I don’t think about it anymore, and I think you captured that feeling that we all go through during our adolescence. The only thing I would say is check for grammar and spelling. I caught a “your” where there should be a “you’re”. Overall, I like that you spoke about something that’s very hard for women to express.
