Gibraltar Bridge
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search

The Gibraltar Bridge is a conceptual structure spanning the *Strait of Gibraltar that has been described in a TV program on the Discovery Channel Engineering the Impossible – Part 1 [1]

Several engineers have advanced designs for the Gibraltar Bridge on various alignments and with differing structural configurations. Professor T.Y. Lin’s proposal for a crossing between Point Oliveros and Point Cires captured the attention of the world, with its 14-kilometre length, deep piers, and unprecedented 5000-meter spans.[2]

The Gibraltar Tunnel, is a proposed rail tunnel that will link Africa and Europe, as an alternative solution. Its feasibility study has been undertaken funded by the European Union.

United States architect, Eugene Tsui produced a revolutionary design which does not resemble any existing bridge and features an original floating and submerging concept while creating a three mile wide floating island in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea.[3]

Although termed the “Gibraltar Bridge”, apart from the last project, there are no plans for either structure to terminate in the territory of Gibraltar which lacks the road and rail network to service such a structure.

Recent talk of a road bridge between Europe and Africa, spanning the Straits of Gibraltar, has centred on a slightly different type of suspension bridge.[4]

A bridge between Europe and Africa would facilitate trade, but would also introduce human problems.[5]

In his 1979 science fiction novel The Fountains of Paradise, futurist Arthur C. Clarke proposed such a structure.

Good read, but a little bit hard going as I like historic dates.

Nice collection of factoids with the Gibraltor Bridge as the unifying element.  Very nice for what it is intended if that intent is info for Wikipedia.

I guess I am a little confused as to whether you wrote this item or not, since you cite Wikipedia at the beginning. Do you mean that you wrote it for Wikipedia? If so, it might help to let people know that. Anyways, as far as a journalism piece, this could use a little work. The lead isn’t very strong, and could use some reworking. There are a few AP style mistakes as well. The ending isn’t bad, but I think maybe you should work on your inverted pyramid style. You also need at least a few quotes. Otherwise it won’t come off well. Keep up the work, I look forward to reading more of your pieces.

I’m not sure if you want a comment on the content or the grammar and punctuation.

The title of a Novel should be underlined.
I would put a colon in between The Discovery Channel: Engineering the Impossible

The title of the piece would conceivably be the headline, so I’d change it in order to garner interest. Like, “The Not so Distant Future: Engineering the Impossible Gibraltar Bridge”

Sorry, but I think this needs to be completely re-written. Part 1, perhaps should be [that has been featured on the Discovery Channels program “Engineering the Impossible”] or something along those lines. In all honesty you jump all over the place, there’s no flow to the piece, and far too many lines either make no sense or seem irrelevant to the article. I had a very hard time reading this.

I guess that I am confused. Why rip a passage from Wikipedia and post it on Urbis? I don’t know how to critique something like this, sorry.

It seems that all you did was copy and paste from Wikipedia. What are you trying to say? What is the point? What are you trying to get acrossed? This is supposed to be your thoughts, or opinions on a subject.
