I write because in elementary school my teachers made me and I hated it. I write because at 9 I won a 2nd place in a church contest with a poem. I write because at 16 I was mad at a friend and found out I had a ½ brother. I write because a poetic friend asked me to come out and play with her. I write because when my sister died I had no other companion. I write because I feel things and need to express those emotions and thoughts. I write because I’m not the only one questioning it, seeing it, exploring it, feeling it, thinking about it or crying because of it. I write because my voice matters and I write because they need something good to read. I write because others need to read their stories, thoughts and feelings on paper and simply…

“He Makes Me Feel” I was numb I awoke numb ate numb showered numb did numb work my playtime was numb I had numbing dreams even all the he’s I fucked were named Numb. Numb was my existence, even when she died even when I was raped I felt only a tiny twinge that quickly went numb. All that I knew to be was numb until an angel entered the numbed stage and changed the course of this play. Actually he did little more than stand in place but his presence brought an energy that shattered my numb ext...

“What is that word?” I wish there was a word for rape that wasn’t quite rape. There has to be a word for what I experience more often than I’d like to confess that doesn’t undermine the power of the word rape. I have not been raped. No stranger has ever stripped me bare and pressed themselves into me. Never took an experience from me that I was forced to share. I was never drugged or intoxicated while being forced into something a “friend” of mine wanted to do. Rape is too harsh of a word far...

“Naked: He said he had seen” The most important view of me When he saw me lying nakedly. But I really wasn’t visible Though I was fully in visual To him he saw bare skin But I was barely bare then. While he saw rolls and curls I was still mentally in my world I was still hidden in my head Even while I lay bare in his bed. He simply did not have the key Though he fit well within me. Something in “us” kept me at bay I not naked though together we lay. Seen were scars and hairs I didn’t shave Bu...

Poetry / Mind, No Mind
This piece reminds of something I wrote some years ago. There is a beautiful tension put in the first stanza that carries into the second though it's laden in anger and no love. There's something very powerful about those last two lines. I wonder if in the second section if there was a way to add a bit more love to the battle so that you can heighten that contridiction you set up early on.
Poetry / in medias res
I liked the imagery and the flow of it. Its a beautiful dance of words, rhythm and touch.
Poetry / Black Poet
This is definitely in its infancy stage but there are a few kernels I hope that does not get loss as it matures. Black voices with choices sadly ending up with nothing. Just with the American dream to be richer than others among them. I think the change from Black Poet to Voices was key here. I do however felt somewhere in the middle it lost track of this point. Not even with fun did they run unless to decorate their guns with diamonds and bling. How quick to forget that their demise came fro...
I saw the movie some time back so I vaguely remember the story. But I would argue that you don't need to be but so familiar with this piece to critique it. I thought the imagery was simply beautiful. I was hooked by the time you said, "From my bodies hot coals, used to/Forging steel and smithing passion." That's a great image. In reading this piece I actually thought about the woman in Africa that got stoned for being pregnant out of wedlock. So though it is based on a more Victorian time per...
