LJK Literary Management Hello Susanna Einstein, My name is Brad Windhauser, and I am seeking representation for a collection of fiction and non-fiction, titled The Hope Stories. “If you start to look around, you will start to see. When what you see catches us off guard, and when we write it as realistically and openly as possible, it offers hope.” —Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird (101). This quote inspired me to create a body of worked that explored how my everyday life informed ...

Just a little fluff of ratty brown and black curly fur, Sassie shook and gazed every which way, cowering in my mother’s arms as we exited the Atlanta airport, taking home our new addition to the family. Arriving in a pet carrier at 5 am, she had flown across the country courtesy of a breeder my grandfather lined up for us. She was of a champion breed blood line and had the price tag to prove it. None of this mattered to my brother and me as we both took turns trying to get our new dog&r...

I held the door, waiting for everyone to catch up, hoping the handle did not slip with the sweat gathering in my palm. Jack gave me the eye that said, ‘Trevor, you’re walking too fast,’ but I just smiled, shuffled everyone in, then followed my dad into the restaurant. Inside, I reached for Jack’s hand just as he went to wipe some sweat from his forehead. Hopefully, no one would storm out like the last time my dad gathered everyone together. “Good evening. Do you ...

Jungle Gym I spent a good portion of my childhood seeking out new and creating ways to amuse myself. I rarely grandstanded for attention from my peers; I typically avoided even interacting with kids my own age for extended periods of time. My own little world provided enough contentment. So engrossed with life within my own walls, often I neglected to pay attention to the very real world around me. I'd dash down the sidewalk of a busy street on my dirt bike, sailing up and over the uneven con...

Rolling this plan into motion would erase everything about William’s past. His son’s death taught him that achieving understanding arrived by way of sacrifice. And now William stood, watching the materialization of his calling with the beginnings of his work finally arrived, feeling his confidence bolstered to new heights at his own success. As he surveyed his future, his immaculately polished black shoes stirred up dirt and dust as he strode across the concrete floor of the warehouse. He lea...

Short Story / Candice... an excerpt
Great scene; wonderful tone, strong POV. we get to "see" candace through her dialogue and the narrator's imagination, even when it teeters on sexual fantasy. Asking her to pull her panties down, though, is a bit much. Would she have stayed on the phone, even for a commission? Somewhat of a letdown that the vacation itself gets bundled up and reduced to "enjoyed it," given with what deftness the buildup/background for the character. If writing a book, why chop? Surely something interesting hap...
Poetry / Rosary
2nd and third line in second stanza are your strongest images. Rest doesn't come together to build on an emotion. Ex, why salty skin? How does that tie to confessions. Obviously this couple is in bed, but why the tension, doubt?

Poetry / The Daysleeper
Strong images, mostly second and third (recliner serving as metaphor for Dad). Stanza five comes across as weak (in context of other strong stanzas). Handled stronger in next stanza, where you show his snoring instead of nod to it. Resolution, through emotionally, seems odd: all speaker cares about is him not making noise (masking safety from anguish)? or is the snoring an indication he's no longer in his nightmare/dream?
Poetry / Finding my way
The anger comes through, yet the emotion comes across as generic without some concrete details.
