Basketball Barnes We moved to Terrace Park when I was in third grade. Terrace Park, as many know, is the sports capital of the universe. It radiates an aura of sportingness that one can feel for hundreds of miles around. It is a vortex of athletics. The street lamps are shaped like soccer balls and people decorate their Christmas trees with hockey pucks. Instead of saying “Hello?” when Terrace Parkians answer their phones they say, “What’s the score?&rdqu...

Arriving in Paris was a blur. I was completely jetlagged and seriously grimy. My initial plan was to tote my luggage from the arrival gate to the RER and go to my stop early to catch the TGV to Biarritz. In my mind I had given myself enough time to do all this plus find a quaint little Parisian café where I would sit and read and sip a strong coffee and taste une asiette de fromage while dropping les bons mots all the while. ‘Voila l’americain culture!’ the Parisians would cry, raising their ...

Before you read this critique, please know that I appreciate anyone who writes, or attempts to write, poetry. My critiques are not intended to be needlessly harsh. But I don't sugarcoat, either. I have been a writer for years, and have made my living off my craft for quite a number of those years. So I do know a few things about writing. But, I'm just one person with one opinion. Please take this critique as an attempt to be helpful. First off, I don't know what you mean by 'people without vi...
This made me smile. It reminds me of the line, 'Self absorbed? How do you think that makes ME feel?' Or, 'Pretentious? Moi?' I hope this was written ironically ...
To the point, concise. In general, I find things that are 'not worth it' to quite often be very 'worth it' indeed. As a writer/composer, one could say I have 'wasted' my life. I choose to think I have invested my talents...
After reading several of these 6-word memoirs I realize just how difficult it is to put an actual whole history into six words. A story is more than a simple statement. It has to represent a history, and at least one character. The Hemingway 6-word memoir (which I still think is amazing) is peopled with at least four characters (parents, dead child, reader of ad) and a sad history we can only guess at. This is what makes his six-word memoir so brilliant. It implies so much with so little, jus...
This is vague and/or obscure. Gentle arrow? Burning kiss? This doesn't say anything to me.
